So to help you cut your car list...


10. Toyota Vios S 1.5 AT
15.44 kilometers-per-liter average of the 1.5-liter Vios S with automatic transmission at the same DOE fuel economy run event. As it so happens, Lao also nominated that the car should be on the list. Like we said, the man does know cars.

9. Toyota Corolla Altis 1.6 MT
Manual-transmission-equipped Toyota Corolla Altis 1.6. It so happens that on the DOE 2009 E10 Fuel Economy Run, it ran an average of 15.48 kilometers on a single liter of fuel, narrowly beating the vios

8. Honda City 1.3 MT
Car shoppers who check out the Honda City usually have its stablemate, the Jazz, in their shortlist. For the DOE's 2009 E10 Fuel Economy Run, the City, which was brand-new then, traveled an average of 20.67 kilometers-per-liter.

7. Hyundai Accent CRDi
In the DOE’s 2008 Fuel Economy Run, the diesel-powered Accent registered a 23.38 kilometers-per-liter while Top Gear Philippines associate editor Paulo Subido’s test drive of one netted a mileage of 16 kilometers-per-liter.

6. Ford Focus 2.0 TDCi MT
In the DOE's 2008 Fuel Economy Run, a Focus TDCi with a manual transmission ran an average of 21.39 kilometers on a single liter of fuel. As if that wasn't impressive enough for a 2.0-liter car, a similar model vehicle outdid that by doing 25.9 liters per kilometer during Ford Group Philippines' second staging of the Coast to Coast Challenge last year.

5. Toyota Prius
the Prius's fuel consumption of 24.23 kilometers-per-liter based on the DOE's 2009 E10 Fuel Economy Run.

4. Lexus CT200h
The Prius and the CT200h produce the same output as both cars use the same 1.8-liter engine and the same hybrid drive system. Lexus claims the mileage of the CT200h is at 24.4 kilometers-per-liter

3. Honda Jazz 1.5
The Honda Jazz came into prominence locally as a fuel-efficient vehicle thanks to Petron's use of the vehicle in the 2008 Xtra Mile Challenge where it ran 1,402.4 kilometers on a single tank of fuel. In the DOE's 2009 E10 Fuel Economy Run, the second-generation Honda Jazz was used and, although its engine displacement was bigger by 0.2 liter, the newer Jazz still registered a remarkable 27.58 kilometers-per-liter figure.

2. Suzuki Alto 0.8 MT
The Celerio's stablemate, the Suzuki Alto,  ran an equally impressive 34 kilometers on a single liter of fuel at the DOE's 2008 fuel-economy run.
